James Copenhaver, 76, one of three rally attendees shot during the 2024 assassination attempt on Donald Trump in Butler, has died, his family said. The cause of death was not disclosed; he was shot in the tricep, and another bullet damaged his colon and kidney.
Copenhaver spent a week in the hospital and was left with nerve damage, CBS News reported; his family described his injuries as “life-altering.” The shooting also killed Pennsylvania firefighter Corey Comperatore, 50, and wounded David Dutch; Trump was wounded in his upper right ear.
Copenhaver and his wife sued the United States in a Pittsburgh federal court in June, alleging negligence, recklessness and carelessness by the Secret Service. Their complaint says failures in security planning and communication led to his “significant, grievous and permanent” injuries; it seeks $150,000 and remains pending in the Western District of Pennsylvania.
