Dr. Idris Evans, a Pittsburgh pediatric critical care physician, was killed and his wife critically injured in a stabbing at their Edgewood home shortly after midnight Thursday. Elijah Hemingway, 32, was arrested and faces homicide and other charges.
Evans' wife told authorities that she and her husband woke to a man stabbing them with a kitchen knife. She ran to a neighbor for help and to call 911; their children, ages 8 and 12, fled to a neighbor and were uninjured.
Court records show Hemingway is awaiting a preliminary hearing on charges of criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, criminal trespass and possessing instruments of crime; he remains hospitalized. Police found him behind a nearby home with cuts to his hand. He told police Evans had invited him over and claimed Evans attacked him with a knife, followed by a struggle involving both victims. Police are investigating whether the men knew each other; Evans' wife said she did not know Hemingway and was unsure whether she heard her husband say the name Elijah.
