Mexico’s Sula Films has joined Pimienta Films as a co-producer of Tatiana Huezo’s fiction feature “Galerna,” which won the Egeda Platino Industria Award at San Sebastián’s WIP Latin America competition. The award carries $34,466 (€30,000) for its lead producer.
Huezo’s second fiction feature after “Prayers for the Stolen” (“Noche de fuego”), “Galerna” follows two casting directors who travel to remote Mexico to find natural actors for a science-fiction film. Their journey reveals a Mexico that welcomes and unsettles them, forcing them to confront their fears and prejudices. Ilse Salas and Lázaro Gabino Rodríguez star; Spain’s Elastica Films had boarded the project earlier.
Sula Films founder Alejandro Sugich and Pimienta Films’ Nicolás Celis reached the co-production agreement at the festival. It is the companies’ second collaboration, following Amat Escalante’s “Lost in the Night,” which screened in the Cannes Première section in 2023. Celis said the film’s positive reception was encouraging as the team works to finish it amid challenging film-financing conditions.
