Houston police took a 17-year-old suspect into custody in connection with Friday’s fatal shooting of LePaul Warren, a Westbury High athlete who played basketball and football. Warren was with a group near campus; investigators have not established a motive.
Police Chief J. Noe Diaz said officers detained the suspect while the teenager was walking in the 11300 block of Hillcroft Avenue, less than four minutes from the school. Drones were used for surveillance at a nearby apartment. Diaz said the suspect is not enrolled at an HISD school. Investigators have not established whether Warren and the suspect knew each other.
Westbury canceled its Friday night homecoming dance and Saturday homecoming football game after the shooting. Warren’s death was the second that week involving a high school student: 15-year-old Royce Witchet was shot and killed outside Westfield High School on Tuesday. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said a 14-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with murder.
