GoFundMe removed a fundraiser to help 81-year-old Donald Johnson pay for his wife Josephine’s cancer care, saying its Trust & Safety team found factual misrepresentations. The company said all donors were refunded; Fox 4 reported it had raised over $281,000.
Local resident Erin Howell started the campaign after seeing Johnson carry heavy luggage while working as an independent contractor delivering lost bags. Howell wrote that he took the job three years ago to help pay for his wife’s treatment and that donations would go toward Josephine’s medical bills.
GoFundMe did not say what specific factual misrepresentations it identified. The Independent said it had sought further information.
