United ISD moved more than 600 Laredo elementary students from Pérez Elementary to Amparo Gutierrez Elementary for the day after an air-conditioning problem was found just before the first bell, so they would not remain on a hot campus during repairs.
At a board meeting, Superintendent Gerardo Cruz said emergency equipment had arrived from Austin and crews were trying to restore the air conditioning by Sept. 18 so students could return by Sept. 21. Board President Javier Montemayor said moving students let crews work safely; the report does not say whether the target dates were met.
