Willson Contreras has no fracture in his right hand but still feels considerable pain when swinging, a week after a pitch hit his hand. The Red Sox first baseman doubts he can return for the playoffs and says he won’t take a roster spot unless he can compete.
Contreras said he is doing everything Boston’s trainers ask as he tries to return, but will listen to his body. He leads the Red Sox with a .905 OPS, 27 home runs and 81 RBIs, batting .276 in 533 plate appearances. Boston has scored nine runs in its last six games and has already secured a place in the Wild Card round.
