Germany’s new government roadmap explicitly commits the country to ending oil, gas and coal use by 2045, while setting a goal for renewables to supply 80% of electricity by 2030, up from 55%. It also calls for 12 gigawatts of new onshore wind and 215 gigawatts of solar capacity.
Germany’s official coal phase-out date remains 2038, though the roadmap leaves room to move it forward to 2035. It also indicates methane emissions will fall 30% by 2030 under the Global Methane Pledge, which Germany signed in 2021.
Andreas Sieber of 350.org called the explicit fossil-fuel exit objective a notable shift, but argued that the economic affairs and energy ministry continued to back more gas use. Former German climate envoy Jennifer Morgan said faster electrification of transport and heating is the next task.
