German authorities are investigating a 105-year-old man accused of being an accessory to multiple murders at Stalag 326 VI K; he allegedly guarded the camp during World War II. The camp registered 180,000–200,000 Soviet POWs, and thousands are believed to have died there.
The camp was in the Senne region of what is now North Rhine-Westphalia. Its memorial describes malnutrition, inadequate medical treatment, poor hygiene and forced labor, and says most prisoners died from undernourishment, severe disease or the effects of forced labor.
The BBC reports that more than 5.3 million Soviet soldiers were held as prisoners of war in Germany, around half of whom are believed to have died.
