Bill Gates urged artificial intelligence regulation, saying AI could be powerful enough to drive events that cause a billion deaths. He said self-regulation was not enough and called for politicians and law enforcement to discuss safeguards and monitoring.
In an NBC interview, Gates said the combination of people with ill intent and the latest AI tools was more powerful than any weapon before it.
The AI regulation debate has gained momentum after OpenAI and Anthropic said they were prepared to slow the technology’s development following a series of high-profile hacking incidents.
