Days of heavy rain flooded Bangkok, disrupting roads, businesses and public transport. Authorities declared a disaster across all 50 districts and made Monday and Tuesday public holidays; officials said two to three rain-free days could be needed to drain the remaining water.
More than 200 temporary shelters had opened, with around 3,000 people staying in them on Sunday. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said drainage systems were working at full capacity and high canal levels could prolong flooding in some communities. Some parts of the capital saw around 300 millimetres of rain in 48 hours; some areas recorded more than 30 centimetres.
Flooding had also affected more than 545,000 people in 25 provinces outside Bangkok. Disaster officials reported at least eight deaths since 16 September; no deaths had been reported in Bangkok at the latest update.
