On Monday, Florida’s attorney general asked a judge to bar OpenAI from developing new AI models without outside oversight in a suit alleging harm to children. OpenAI says it has paused training its most capable models until additional safeguards are in place.
Florida’s June lawsuit accuses OpenAI of misrepresenting ChatGPT’s safety, alleging it supplied information to school shooters, offered self-harm guidance and addicted young users. Monday’s filing also asks the court to keep minors off ChatGPT and bar OpenAI from giving the service “human attributes.” OpenAI denies liability in related cases, says ChatGPT provides information broadly available online and says it continues to update its safety tools.
The lawsuit was prompted by a shooting at a Tallahassee university last year and other incidents in which ChatGPT allegedly provided information to people who later committed violent acts. The filing also cites comments by a former OpenAI employee and a current board member that AI development could threaten humanity and should be slowed. Uthmeier is the first state attorney general to sue OpenAI over its impact on young users.
