President Donald Trump’s Tuesday meeting with tech CEOs will address balancing AI innovation and oversight, House Speaker Mike Johnson said. Johnson opposed a moratorium or “hyper-regulation,” warning that the U.S. could lose the race to China.
Johnson said transparency and oversight are needed and suggested the Justice Department could have a role if AI risks go awry.
Anthropic and rival firms including OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Microsoft and xAI have called for slowing AI development, warning of risks to humanity and urging governments to cooperate. Trump has downplayed concerns about AI misuse harming people and says existing guardrails include the Justice Department; House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Congress must act to protect the public on AI safety.
