Dr. Idris Evans, 46, was killed and his wife critically injured in a stabbing at their Edgewood, Pennsylvania, home early Thursday, police said. Police identified Elijah Hemingway, 32, as the suspect; he faces criminal homicide and burglary charges.
Detectives said witness interviews indicated Hemingway allegedly entered the home and attacked the couple while they slept. Evans’ wife told investigators they awoke to a man attacking them with a kitchen knife; she yelled for their children, ages 8 and 12, to flee to a neighbor’s home. She was in critical but stable condition Thursday.
A Monroeville police K-9 unit found Hemingway behind a nearby home with cuts to his hand. He remained hospitalized Thursday pending transfer to the Allegheny County Jail and also faced aggravated assault and criminal trespass charges. Investigators had not announced a motive; whether Hemingway and Evans knew each other remained under investigation.
