Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev heads to New York Wednesday for talks with Trump officials Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner and others, two sources told Reuters. A source said Russia-U.S. economic ties, energy and a peaceful settlement in Ukraine are on the agenda.
The visit was agreed with Russian President Vladimir Putin and is scheduled for New York during the UN General Assembly, the sources said. It follows Putin’s meeting with U.S. representatives at the Kremlin earlier this month, which Dmitriev also attended. One source said the aim is to keep Russia-U.S. dialogue and peacemaking efforts going.
After meeting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said both Russia and Ukraine had expressed interest in a limited ceasefire involving grain and energy. In earlier contacts with Witkoff and Kushner, Dmitriev negotiated a sanctions waiver for seaborne Russian oil, aimed at stabilizing global energy markets, and several prisoner exchanges between Russia and the United States.
