Derek Hough joked “I didn’t get the memo” after viewers criticized Dancing With the Stars’ one-word critiques. On Sept. 22, the judge speaking third after each dance could give only one word, as 14 couples, live voting and an elimination had to fit the two-hour show.
Hough posted a video lip-syncing a confused Michael Scott from The Office, then joked on Instagram that he should have used the one-word mouthful “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.” During the episode, he stretched the rule with phrases such as “fast-fierce-fantastic” and “good performance.” Reddit commenters said abbreviated critiques gave contestants little useful feedback for the following week.
Judges’ scores were combined with live viewer votes before Giada De Laurentiis and partner Alan Bersten were eliminated. They had the lowest judges’ total, 12 out of 30, after receiving three 4s for their salsa. Jenna Dewan and Val Chmerkovskiy, Amber Glenn and Pasha Pashkov, and Ezra Frech and Daniella Karagach each scored 21.
