China’s foreign ministry said Saturday it respects President Donald Trump’s push to rename artificial intelligence “super intelligence,” but China has no plans to use the term. Trump had said a day earlier that Xi Jinping seemed to favor the change.
Trump offered “Super Intelligence,” “Extreme Intelligence” and “Supreme Intelligence” as alternatives to AI in a Truth Social poll. In a Sept. 21 poll between “super intelligence” and “superior intelligence,” the former received about 65% of the vote.
The naming push comes amid a debate over AI development. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei urged slowing its pace, a warning endorsed by Elon Musk and OpenAI’s Sam Altman. Trump called doomsday fears about AI a “HOAX” and said the U.S. would not slow progress, arguing it must stay ahead of China.
