Senate defeats Iran war-powers resolution 50-49; Fetterman votes no

The Senate voted 50-49 Thursday to reject a resolution that would limit President Donald Trump’s military actions against Iran. Pennsylvania Democrat John Fetterman was the only Democrat to vote against it; Republican Dave McCormick also voted no.

Reuters reported this was the Senate’s 14th vote on the measure. Four Republicans joined the 49 who supported it, and the House had passed the resolution on Sept. 15. The 1973 War Powers Resolution requires military operations to wind down after 60 days unless Congress authorizes continued action, according to Politico; the article says Senate votes have continued after that deadline.

Fetterman made no public statement after Thursday’s vote. On Feb. 28, he called himself a “hard no” on the effort and said, “My vote is Operation Epic Fury.” Democratic Rep. Chris Deluzio criticized the vote, saying it would keep the war going and citing deaths, tens of billions of dollars in costs and higher prices. A New York Times/Philadelphia Inquirer/Siena poll of 615 Pennsylvania voters conducted Sept. 15-22 found 31% strongly or somewhat approved of Trump’s handling of the war, while 67% strongly or somewhat disapproved.
