UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham said there will be no early general election and that the next vote will be in 2029. Ahead of Labour’s conference in Liverpool next week, he said he wants to focus on living costs and business costs, not another election campaign.
Recent media reports said some of Burnham’s advisers were considering an election as early as next year. Polling cited in those reports suggested Labour would remain the largest party in a snap election but fall short of a parliamentary majority.
In other interviews, Burnham said the loss of cooperation with neighbouring countries after Brexit had worsened illegal Channel crossings. He said the government would seek to stop them but would not set a deadline or promise it would succeed.
