With under 40 days until midterms, 17 Republicans in federal and statewide races have called to end the Iran war, through votes to curb Trump's war powers or public statements. Diesel prices are up nearly 60% since fighting began in late February.
A CNN poll last week found 67% disapproved of Trump’s job performance and 73% of his handling of Iran. Also, 73% said the war was hurting their finances, including 59% of Republicans. Of 20 resolutions Congress has voted on, some Republicans joined Democrats in passing measures five times; the resolutions call for congressional approval to continue hostilities but do not compel Trump to act.
Michigan Senate candidate Mike Rogers said the war should end quickly but said any deal must ensure Iran cannot build a nuclear weapon. Ohio Sen. John Husted also called for a quick end but voted against a war-powers resolution Thursday. Iowa Rep. Ashley Hinson called for an “immediate end” after opposing earlier resolutions and urged the House to reconvene for fuel-cost measures, including pausing diesel exports, suspending the gas tax, expanding E15 and biodiesel, and providing diesel relief for truckers and farmers.
