Bill Gates urges US AI safeguards, warning AI could drive events causing a billion deaths

Bill Gates urged the US to require safeguards and monitoring for AI development, warning that people with ill intent using AI could drive events causing a billion deaths. The call followed a meeting where major US AI-company CEOs agreed the industry's pace should slow.

Gates said self-regulation was not enough and called for lawmakers and law enforcement to make safeguards and monitoring mandatory. He said this would add some overhead for the industry but would not dramatically slow its work.

President Donald Trump took a different position in a Truth Social post earlier this month, saying a strong president and existing criminal and regulatory powers were all the AI guardrails needed. He also claimed the US was leading China in AI and described opposition to AI and data centers as a “sick conspiracy.”
