Arizona State hockey coach Greg Powers declined to answer questions about Matthew Mayich, who collapsed during an outdoor workout on Aug. 20 and was left on life support. Mayich’s attorney told ESPN he suffered exertional heat stroke and had “zero chance” of recovery.
In an interview published Sept. 23, The Athletic’s Katie Strang asked Powers why he would discuss hockey but not the circumstances surrounding Mayich’s condition. Powers said he was “not able to answer questions” and, when asked how he had modeled accountability, replied “In a lot of ways” before declining to elaborate.
The Athletic, citing sources with knowledge of the workout, reported that Mayich collapsed after stumbling and dropping a medicine ball, remained in the sun for several minutes, and was carried into the shade by four teammates. The outlet said an ambulance arrived at 8:31 a.m., about 90 minutes after the workout began.
