Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen was beatified at a Mass in St. Louis on Sept. 24, advancing his cause for sainthood in the Catholic Church. Beatification is the second of three stages; Pope Francis approved a miracle attributed to Sheen in 2019.
The Associated Press reported that the approved miracle concerned James Fulton Engstrom, born in 2010 without a pulse and revived by medical workers. His mother, Bonnie Engstrom, told NBC affiliate KSDK she repeated Sheen’s name; a later scan showed James had a normal, healthy brain.
Sheen became a national television figure as host of the religious program Life Is Worth Living, which drew 30 million viewers a week and ran until 1957. He won the 1953 Emmy for the show, beating Lucille Ball and CBS’ Edward R. Murrow.
