UConn, James Madison and Miami (Ohio) sought to join the American Conference, but the league is not expanding, On3’s Brett McMurphy reported. The conference said Sept. 25 it was “not proactively seeking additional members.”
UConn would have joined as a football-only member; its football program has been independent since the school left the American for the Big East in 2019. James Madison, a Sun Belt member, made the 2025 playoff, while Miami (Ohio), a MAC member, has increased its football roster spending.
The American last expanded by adding Army as a football-only member ahead of the 2024 season.
