ABC News counts at least 21 people shot by federal immigration agents under Trump’s second term; eight shootings were fatal, including three U.S. citizens among the dead. On Sunday, an ICE officer shot Venezuelan DoorDash courier Wilber Rafael Garces Perez in Austin.
ABC also found at least 15 incidents in which federal immigration agents fired shots without injuring anyone. DHS alleged Garces Perez was in the U.S. illegally and had a final order of removal; his attorney said he was in the country legally and had applied for asylum. Law enforcement sources told ABC the officer was not wearing a body-worn camera.
After Austin officials and some House Democrats called for ICE to leave Austin, DHS said the agency would not slow down or leave. At a Tuesday congressional hearing, families of Renee Good, fatally shot by an ICE agent in Minneapolis in January, and Lorenzo Salgado, fatally shot in Houston in July, discussed the deaths; Salgado’s son said they still lacked his father’s wallet and phone and had no answers from the government. Good’s shooter has not been charged. LULAC’s president called for an independent investigation of Garces Perez’s shooting.
