The Army identified Capt. Bianca C. Wilkerson, 37, as the 19th U.S. service member in the public death tally since the Iran war began. It said she died Sept. 18 in a non-combat-related incident while deployed to Doha, Qatar, supporting overseas operations.
The Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS) lists her death as “pending” under “Overseas Operations,” not Operation Epic Fury. A defense official said casualties in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility have been classified as Overseas Operations since Epic Fury ended May 5; that classification is separate from pay and benefits determinations. Wilkerson is the fifth death in that category; four other July deaths and 14 listed under Epic Fury bring the public DCAS tally to 19.
DCAS lists the death as non-hostile and gives the cause as “undetermined.” A defense official previously told Task & Purpose that Wilkerson suffered a medical incident aboard a military flight to Saudi Arabia. The Army said the incident remains under investigation and an autopsy is pending. A defense official confirmed Wilkerson was posthumously promoted to major.
