The Yankees called up Alexander Cornielle instead of activating Trent Grisham or Giancarlo Stanton, a choice that appears to signal neither will be considered for Tuesday’s Wild Card Series. Fernando Cruz’s move to the 60-day injured list makes him ineligible until Oct. 25.
The transfer opened a 40-man roster spot for Cornielle. Cruz, a reliever who went on the injured list Aug. 26 with a partially torn shoulder labrum, had hoped to return for the playoffs but is now unofficially done for the season; his eligibility date is one day before World Series Game 3.
Beck was recalled to start Friday’s doubleheader opener but allowed seven runs in five innings of the 10-2 loss to Baltimore and was optioned between games. He went 0-2 with a 9.95 ERA in four games over five short stints with the Yankees. Cornielle, a 25-year-old right-hander with no big-league experience, went 5-6 with a 3.39 ERA and 89 strikeouts in 85 innings across 21 games, including 20 starts, for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
