The Yankees retired CC Sabathia’s No. 52 at Yankee Stadium on Friday before a doubleheader against Baltimore, making him the 24th player or manager honored by the club. Michael Strahan also congratulated the Hall of Fame pitcher on Instagram.
Sabathia played 11 seasons in New York, finishing with a 134-88 record, a 3.81 ERA and 1,700 strikeouts as a Yankee. He was the 2009 ALCS MVP as the Yankees won the World Series; he is the fifth member of that championship team to have his number retired.
Sabathia unveiled his Monument Park plaque with family and friends, then threw the ceremonial first pitch to his son Carsten. He said he never expected to be honored in Monument Park and that the moment felt bigger to him than the Hall of Fame.
