Donald Trump and Xi Jinping ended Xi’s Washington state visit Friday at the National Archives, where they viewed the Declaration of Independence and US Constitution. Trump said they discussed the Iran war, but the summit produced few concrete results.
Trump confirmed the Iran discussion amid claims that Beijing is supporting Iran. China has continued buying Iranian oil, while US media have reported that Beijing supplied Tehran with intelligence for attacks on US troops. Asked about progress on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, Trump said, “I think we’re going to do great.”
Xi said the trip added “new substance” to May’s summit and that the leaders had agreed to “strategic stability” based on respect, fairness and reciprocity. The main announcements were a shorter-than-hoped-for extension of the US-China trade truce and the imminent arrival of two pandas at a US zoo. Xi floated two more meetings this year, at November’s APEC meeting in China and December’s G20 summit at Trump’s Doral resort in Miami. The tour came a week after Trump barred three major US media outlets from the White House; a judge ordered them readmitted Thursday.
