Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) said Donald Trump is “in denial” about the coming midterms and predicted he would face “comeuppance” on Election Day. Massie also forecast a “reckoning” the following day and said Trump’s response to the vote should be watched.
Massie pointed to George W. Bush firing Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld the day after Republicans lost the 2006 midterms. He said any comparable move by Trump, or other measures, could show whether the president had understood the result.
The report says Trump’s low approval ratings appear to have prompted some Republicans, including candidates who once accepted his backing, to distance themselves ahead of November’s midterms. Massie said they were now running from Trump over the election and the war.
