Xi Jinping began his US state visit Thursday, telling Donald Trump the two countries must avoid conflict. Trump said talks would cover trade, security and AI; Xi called for fair treatment of Chinese firms and healthy, bounded competition.
The two sides agreed Wednesday to extend their one-year trade truce by two months; it was due to expire on Nov. 10 as they seek a longer-term deal. China is also pressing the US to ease export curbs on advanced chips, while Xi is expected to raise US arms sales to Taiwan, which Beijing considers the most sensitive issue in bilateral ties.
Xi said both countries should ensure AI remains under human control and serves people's well-being. The US proposed a notification mechanism for AI incidents between the countries this week. Xi also said China would invite 100,000 American young people for study and exchanges over the next five years and send two pandas to Atlanta.
