Rep. Haley Stevens introduced a bill to let workers in physically demanding jobs, including construction, roofing, nursing and manufacturing, collect full Social Security benefits at 60. It still needs congressional approval.
The bill would direct the Social Security Administration to create a list of qualifying jobs and update it every three years. Under current rules, Americans born after 1960 can receive full benefits at 67 or reduced benefits starting at 62.
Stevens' office said the measure would encourage Americans to pursue trades as the country needs more skilled workers. Employment of construction laborers and nurses is projected to grow 6% over the next decade or so, faster than the average for all careers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A federal report released in June said the trust fund that pays benefits may run out by late 2032.
