Women describe money habits that stuck after growing up poor

BuzzFeed

On Reddit, women who said they grew up poor and are now financially comfortable described money habits they still struggle to change: guilt over nonessential purchases, buying extra groceries, saving the last of products like shampoo, and hunting for deals.

Other examples included walking instead of paying for a ride, budgeting for higher bills and lower pay than usual, and keeping $20 in a car for gas, food or other needs. One respondent said they worked more than one job as a backup plan despite not needing to.

Food and household frugality also appeared in the replies: people described saving tiny portions of leftovers, finishing all the food on their plate, cutting paper towels into smaller pieces and reusing foil. Others said they delayed replacing items until they broke or saved condiment packets and napkins.
