Why S&P 500 investors may not need financials-only funds

Motley Fool

Motley Fool says investors do not need a fund focused only on small- and mid-cap financials: S&P 500 funds already hold major financial firms, while it recommends broader exposure to value, smaller-company and international stocks.

The article says roughly 75 large-cap financial stocks in the S&P 500 were collectively flat year to date and up 1% over the previous 12 months. It also puts the index’s 10-year, inflation-adjusted Shiller P/E at 41.59, near an all-time high.

Vanguard’s 10-year outlook projects average annualized returns of 6.4%–8.4% for value stocks, 4.7%–6.7% for small-caps and 4.5%–6.5% for international ex-U.S. stocks. Its projected ranges for large-caps and growth stocks are 4.1%–6.1% and 3.6%–5.6%, respectively.
