White House guidance omitted CNN from Trump’s Sept. 26 Air Force One trip to a University of Tennessee football game, although the network was scheduled to cover him for the television pool. Trump said he wanted “real news” and called CNN “fake press.”
The omission came two days after a federal judge ordered a two-week lift of the White House ban on CNN, MSNOW and Politico. The outlets had sued Trump and three White House officials; their reporters regained access to White House grounds and recovered their press passes on Sept. 24.
The primary television pool—ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox News and CNN—did not cover Trump at the Sept. 23 U.S.-China summit in solidarity with CNN. Pool cameras covered the summit’s second day on Sept. 25.
