Pope Leo XIV warned French diplomats, including President Emmanuel Macron, on Friday that overreliance on AI and other technology could erode humanity as machines shape daily life. He called for ethical education to protect human dignity and discern moral good.
In a separate address at UNESCO on Friday, Leo said AI can amplify misinformation. He warned that, without truth, language can become subject to violence and the arbitrary will of the powerful.
In August, he said rapid AI development risked creating new technological dependence, with poorer nations increasingly reliant on wealthier ones. He warned innovation could become another vehicle for ideological or economic colonialism.
