Two shootings in South Africa killed 27 people and wounded 26: 17 died at a tavern in Wedela, southwest of Johannesburg, on Saturday, and 10 at a barbecue venue near Cape Town early Sunday. Police said no suspects had been arrested.
In Wedela, police said eight gunmen armed with assault rifles and pistols opened fire on customers outside and then inside the tavern, before setting two vehicles alight. The motive was unknown, but deputy provincial police commissioner Fred Kekana said the attack appeared to be retaliation for an incident at the same tavern last month. One victim was being sought by police in connection with that incident, in which one person was killed and another wounded.
The shootings took place amid high levels of gun violence in South Africa, which has a population of about 62 million and records roughly 60 murders a day. President Cyril Ramaphosa said security forces would continue efforts to reduce criminality and violence.
