UN Secretary-General António Guterres says the US, China and other powers are racing to build increasingly powerful AI systems without adequate international safeguards. He urges governments to set guardrails, warning the race could put populations at risk.
Speaking on GZERO World with Ian Bremmer, Guterres said competition and innovation should continue, but AI governance should not be left to the companies building the technology. He cited US-Soviet rules on nuclear weapons during the Cold War as a model for cooperation despite rivalry.
Guterres also said warnings about existential risks from leaders of frontier AI companies should not be ignored.
