South African police launched a manhunt after a tavern shooting in Wedela, west of Johannesburg, killed 17 people and wounded 15 on Saturday evening. Police say eight unidentified men allegedly opened fire inside and outside; no arrests have been made.
Police said the alleged attackers were reportedly armed with pistols and AK-47 rifles. They allegedly searched some patrons and took their cellphones before fleeing in two unidentified vehicles. All 15 people with gunshot wounds were transferred to medical facilities.
Police figures cited in the report show an average of 58 people were murdered each day in South Africa between January and March. The report also notes that 11 people were killed in a shooting south of Durban last week and 12 died in an informal settlement in a Johannesburg suburb in June.
