Washington, DC, is expected to miss the worst of this weekend’s nor’easter. Northeast winds could bring minor coastal flooding in low-lying areas near the tidal Potomac and Chesapeake Bay; gusts may reach 25–30 mph, and rain should be limited in the District and suburbs.
The storm is expected to track offshore, with the heaviest rain and strongest winds forecast farther north, particularly from Long Island into New England, according to Capital Weather. The National Weather Service says conditions around DC should be mostly dry, though a few showers remain possible as the storm makes its closest approach.
A nor’easter is named for the strong northeasterly winds it produces along the East Coast. Forecasters say this storm could become the first nor’easter of fall if it develops as projected.
