Volkswagen is taking more orders for electric cars than for combustion models in Germany, Motor1 reports, citing Automobilwoche. It is dropping plans for extra shifts at Wolfsburg, where output is expected to be about 580,000 vehicles rather than more than 600,000.
Production is shifting elsewhere: Emden is set to add at least two shifts for the ID.7 liftback and wagon, while Zwickau is seeing stronger demand for the ID.3 Neo. Volkswagen's ID. Polo has passed 40,000 orders across Europe.
Wolfsburg has long been configured for combustion vehicles, while EVs typically need fewer mechanical components and less labor to assemble. That mismatch can leave automakers with more capacity for combustion models than current demand requires. The plant builds the Golf, Tiguan and Tayron; Golf production is scheduled to move to Puebla, Mexico, in 2027, Motor1 reported.
