An anonymous Virginia woman won a lottery game's $2 million top prize on her lunch break, then returned to work without sharing the news. She chose a $952,000 lump sum before taxes; a law that took effect over the summer let her claim anonymously.
The law lets winners withhold their name, hometown and prize amount unless they give written permission, the Virginia Lottery says. Before the change, Virginia allowed lottery winners to remain anonymous only if their prizes exceeded $10 million.
She bought the ticket at Love Food Mart in Norfolk after what the Virginia Lottery described as a particularly stressful day at work. The game began Sept. 1 and still had two unclaimed top prizes when the story was published; the odds of winning the top prize were 1 in 408,000.
