An anonymous senior Iranian official told Reuters Tehran would make no nuclear concessions even if the US accepts Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The official said the strait would stay closed until Washington meets all of Iran’s conditions.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Thursday that Tehran’s proposal offered to reopen the Strait and called for hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon, to end within seven days. It also calls for the US to lift its naval blockade on Iranian ports, release Iran’s frozen funds and waive oil sanctions. Tehran says detailed nuclear negotiations would begin only after the US meets its conditions.
The official said Iran would make no concessions over what the official described as Iran’s rights, including uranium enrichment and shipping highly enriched uranium abroad; shipping it is one of the main US demands. The IAEA estimated Iran had 440.9 kg of uranium enriched to 60% when Israel and the US attacked Iranian nuclear facilities in June 2025, but how much survived is unclear. Iran denies seeking nuclear weapons, and Iranian authorities have said it could agree to dilute its most highly enriched uranium.
