North Carolina rose from seventh to No. 1 in the IWSOC women’s soccer poll after two wins last week. The Tar Heels are 9-1 overall and 2-0 in ACC play; their new top ranking will be tested Friday at No. 16 Virginia.
UNC rallied from a 2-1 deficit to beat Duke 4-2, then shut out Alcorn State 5-0. Senior midfielder Lilliah Blum scored twice against Duke and assisted on UNC’s fourth goal. She was named ACC Offensive Player of the Week and has four goals and 10 assists this season.
This is the 38th season UNC has been ranked No. 1 at some point during the year. Its only loss was to then-No. 5 Michigan State, despite the Tar Heels outshooting the Spartans 21-7. Friday’s road game against Virginia is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET in Charlottesville.
