UN refugee chief Barham Salih told the Security Council that conditions for Sahrawi refugees are deteriorating and humanitarian needs remain significantly underfunded. He said displacement has persisted for more than 50 years and called the status quo unsustainable.
Salih said generations of Sahrawi refugees have grown up in Tindouf and nearby camps amid uncertainty and limited prospects. In October 2025, Security Council members voted in favor of a US-backed resolution describing Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara as the “most feasible” solution.
