UMaine prepares layoffs as Commonwealth University could cut up to 175 jobs

UMaine is preparing faculty and staff layoffs over a projected $19 million shortfall; Pennsylvania’s Commonwealth University faces a $17 million deficit and could cut up to 175 jobs. Minnesota State’s chancellor said its 33-institution system may close some campuses.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed two laws allowing community college districts to offer two to 12 new bachelor’s degrees, with the number tied to credential-completion and transfer rates. Indiana University reported international enrollment fell 15.6% from a year earlier to 4,763 this fall.

Researchers sued NIH this month, alleging the agency violated their First Amendment rights by screening and often terminating grants based on 235 keywords tied to subjects the Trump administration disfavors. The Education Department is redirecting about $235 million originally intended for other minority-serving colleges, including Hispanic-serving institutions, to historically Black and tribal colleges, Inside Higher Ed reported; last year, it canceled $350 million in MSI grants, saying many were racially discriminatory. A federal panel did not decide whether to recommend withdrawing federal recognition from the American Bar Association’s accreditation arm.
