At least 27 people were killed and 26 wounded in two South African shootings, police said Sunday. A bar west of Johannesburg was attacked Saturday evening, killing 17; a venue outside Cape Town was attacked early Sunday, killing 10. No suspects have been arrested.

Police said eight gunmen armed with assault rifles fired on customers outside the bar and then inside, killing 13 males and four females; they torched two vehicles as they fled. The motive was unknown. At the venue in a township outside Cape Town, five victims were declared dead at the scene and five others died while being taken to hospital.

South Africa grapples with persistent gun violence often linked to gang rivalries and competition among informal businesses. The country records roughly 60 murders a day. In March, soldiers moved into violence hotspots in Johannesburg to support police efforts to tackle crime.
