Two sinkholes on Preston’s Orchard Street remain unexplained after surveys by councils and United Utilities. The first appeared on 23 July, halting renovation work; a larger one opened last week. Work will resume once a solution and course of action are agreed.
Preston City Council said United Utilities was reviewing the survey findings, but the void did not appear to have been caused by any of the company’s assets. Investigations by all agencies were continuing.
In a letter to affected traders, the council acknowledged their concern over delays and disruption. It said resolving the issue was essential to ensure the long-term integrity of the highway and underground infrastructure.
