A woman’s body found in Thembisa on Saturday was the 10th found near Johannesburg since mid-July. Police chief Tommy Mthombeni said she appeared to have been stoned to death; a post-mortem will determine the cause. Police are checking for links, but none are confirmed.
Two women were charged last week with the murder of the woman whose body was the ninth found. Police said that killing may have stemmed from a relationship-related matter. Investigators believe the ninth killing was isolated, though they say some other cases may be connected.
Three bodies were found within six kilometres of one another in Ekurhuleni in July and August; six bodies were found there within 10 days earlier this month. South Africa has one of the world’s highest femicide rates, with an average of 15 women killed each day.
