Two HIT student designs for children with disabilities win top 2026 Fixperts prizes

Two student teams from Holon Institute of Technology won first and second place in the Helen Hamlyn Center for Design’s 2026 Fixperts Awards, with an adapted bike for 5-year-old Ziv Cohen and breathing-training equipment for 11-year-old Yarin Mosseri.

“Ziv’s Bike,” by Shai Sheinfeld and Roy After, has an adjustable pedal to secure Ziv’s foot and an extended handlebar for better control; it is intended to let him ride without adult help. “Breathing Training for Yarin,” by Noga Tzur and Uri David, supports Yarin’s posture and uses different mouthpieces for exhalation exercises. Ziv has left-side hypertonia after a stroke at four months; Yarin has cerebral palsy, developmental delay and epilepsy.

The Fixperts program connects students with people with disabilities to develop practical solutions to everyday problems. Project leader Prof. Gad Charni called the awards international recognition and said they were especially notable amid an academic boycott of Israel. He said academics at the ceremony praised the projects and estimated they were at the level of master’s-degree final projects.
